Private Duty Nursing
Understanding the Difference Between Home Care and Private Duty Nursing
Home care and private duty nursing are not the same — and it’s important to know the
difference so your loved one gets the right support.
Home Care Aides provide non-medical help, often called custodial care. This includes assistance with everyday tasks like bathing, dressing, meal prep, light housekeeping, and companionship. It’s ideal for seniors or individuals who need extra support with daily living but don’t require medical treatment.
Private Duty Nursing offers a higher level of care provided by licensed nurses. These nurses can assist with medications, manage medical equipment like braces or catheters, perform wound care, and monitor health conditions.
While both services take place in the comfort of home, home care focuses on day-to-day support, while private duty nursing includes medical care for those recovering from illness, surgery, or managing chronic health conditions.
The goal of both services is the same: to help your loved one stay safe, healthy, and independent at home — for as long as possible.

What Private Duty Nursing Include
Private duty nursing provides advanced, in-home medical care for individuals who need ongoing support. This may include monitoring serious health conditions, IV and nutritional therapy, wound care for surgical sites or pressure sores, and administering injections.
In addition to medical care, elderly care at home may also involve skilled, non-medical support— such as help with bathing, dressing, eating, transportation, or grocery shopping. These services make it easier for seniors to stay safe and comfortable in their own homes.
The overall goal of private duty nursing is to help your loved one recover, manage their health, or maintain their independence for as long as possible — all in a familiar, caring environment.
